Draw the Lewis structure of the molecule. What do you predict for the bond order of the C¬S bonds?

Answer

Lewis structures (also known as  electron dot structures) are diagrams that represent the valence electrons of atoms within a molecule. These Lewis symbols and Lewis structures help visualize the valence electrons of atoms and molecules, whether they exist as lone pairs or within bonds.

In order to draw Lewis dot structure of any molecule , following rules need to be followed:

  1. Count the electrons in outer orbit of each atom present in the molecule and sum them up.
  2. Considered the least electronegative atom as central atom and arrange other atoms in an imaginary whorl around it.
  3. Arrange the total electron  in between these atom in such a way doublet of hydrogen and helium and octet of other elements must be completed.

Based on Lewis dot structure , it is predicted that there is triple bond between carbon and sulphur atom. Thus bond order of C-S bond is 3.
