1. Make a table to show the common characteristics used to group bacterial genera or species in the following groups and give one example of genus for each: (a) lactic acid bacteria, (b) coliforms, (c) proteolytic bacteria, (d) psychrotrophic bacteria, and (e) enteric pathogens.

Answer

A)lactic acid bacteria

These are gram positive, rod shaped bacteria and they all share a common Metabolic and physiological characteristics.

These bacteria are found mainly in the milk and they ferment the carbohydrate in the milk and produces lactic acid as an end product and hence the name Lactic Acid Bacteria .

Eg.Lactobacillus

B) Coliforms

These are gram negative, rod shaped motile or non motile bacteria. These all bacteria contains the enzyme beta galactosidase. These bacteria ferment lactose and produces gas and acid

Eg.E.Coli.

C)Proteolytic bacteria

These are the bacteria which contains enzymes like protease that can catalyse the hydrolysis of peptide bonds in a protein.

This even helps in breaking down if proteins in the Human colon.

Eg.Streptococcus.

D)Pyschrotrophic bacteria

These are the bacteria that can grow at less than 7 degree Celsius. But these have better growth at higher temperature. They are particularly found in milk which can gets killed by pasteurisation.

Eg.Pseudomonas

E)Enteric pathogens

These are tha bacteria which are pathogenic to the humans and infected through the gastrointestinal tract. Many bacteria are seen in the Gut but many of these have effect but these enteric pathogens have a harmful effect and can produce a disease.

Eg.Salmonella
