The nephron is the functional unit of the kidney. The kidney filters blood and purifies the body fluid. Urine is formed by the kidney.Kidney present on the back of the abdominal cavity, the right kidney slightly smaller and lower than the left kidney.
The kidney is surrounded by 3 layers of outer tough layer called renal fascia made up of connective tissue, the middle perirenal fat capsule that anchors the kidney in place, and the innermost layer called the renal capsule.
But internally kidney has an outer cortex, middle medulla, and inner renal pelvis in the region of the hilum(the concave part where nerves and blood vessels enter or exit). The renal cortex(outer part) is granular due to the presence of a nephron and it is extented to medulla redion. The medulla region consists of 5-8 pyramidal tissue mass called renal pyramids in each kidney. There is a space between this pyramids called renal colummns through which the blood vessels pass. Tips of the pyramids called renal papilla that point toward renal palvis. Cortical regions along with renal pyramids form lobes of kidney. The inner renal pelvis branched out into 2-3 extensions called major calyces and further branch into minor calyces. renal pelvis lead the ureter out of the kidney via hilum and than this ureter (urine bearing tubes) empty the urine into urinay bladder.
